My Thoughts of Fair Weather Fans/ Bandwagoners:
I first looked up the definition from Urban Dictionary.com
fan of a sports team who only shows support when the team is doing well. During hard times they usually bandwagon other teams. They basically have no real loyalty to the team, but still manage to get better seats than you at the game. Strangely they mysteriously vanish at the first sign of trouble.
Fair Weather Fan's creed:
Last to join, first to leave.
So what gets me is fair weather fans. The fans that claim that they are die hard fans until their team disappoints them and then they put away that memorabilia and start on the team that just won the championships. I went to the store the other day to get myself an Angels shirt. Guess what I couldn’t find? An Angels Shirt. Guess what I did find? Yankees Galore. Guess what I found a couple of on the clearance rack? You guessed it Dodgers stuff. Now I live in So Cal. I am a Angels fan on and off season. I look forward to spring training and opening day, Big Bang Fridays, and seeing my boys in red for another season, so I as a fan would like to be able to buy any Angels memorabilia I want to at any time a year regardless of if they are in or out of the playoffs. What annoys me the most is that by this weekend I guarantee we will see a sea of Yankee fans EVERYWHERE! And guess what…All their hats/Jerseys/shirts will be brand spankin’ new. They haven’t cried in this stuff, or sat through an entire 108 degree weather game in this stuff. They haven’t watched their pitcher close out a game in the rain and lose it. They don’t have any memories with this stuff except for the few games they watched on TV of them winning the world series. I guarantee you they didn’t watch over 100 games on television and went to about 28 of them. They probably cannot name the first ever player they were a fan of on the Yankees. Most of them will probably say their all time favorite is Texeria or Jeter. I’m not just picking on Yankee fair weather fans though because the Angels have their fair share of “fair weather fans”. I get called a fair weather fan by people who are not Angels fans. I have a sticker & license plate on the back of my car to show my team spirit; I have a bobble head on my desk, and Angels season calendar and a lucky ticket on my bulletin board. But, because of the fair weather Angel fans, I get called it. By the time those words fly out of their mouth I feel like I have to prove them wrong? Now why should I do that. I have loved the Angels since I can remember being alive. Ive watched Brian Downing, Wally Joyner, Jim Abbot, Chili Davis, Chuck Finley, Nolan Ryan, all play on that field. I have been through all the losing, winning, being bought by Disney and their horrible uniforms (periwinkle?!), The California Angels, The Anaheim Angels, The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (ugh!)…I have seen them win the World Series once in my lifetime and it was one of the best days of my life. I have seen them be in First place, last place, very last place, blow it in the playoffs, shine in the playoffs, etc. But, I still come back every single April to watch them play. I check the trade rumors all the time during off season, I miss it when were not playing. There are fans who became fans when we won the world series in 2002 and have came and went. There are people that claim to be fans but do not sit through those games where we lose 11-1 to the Rockies (it aint over till its over guys). They leave when its raining even though the game is still going on. Don’t you think the players know at the drop of one ball the “fans” get up and walk out of the stadium when they make an error? Do you really think they think their fans are loyal? Not when you do that. I just wish people would just stick to a team and make a commitment to them through good and bad. There is one thing my dad taught me about being a fan is the team you choose win or lose they are your team, regardless of anything else and, I as a mother hope that my son doesn’t choose Boston but, if he does, he has got to be a fan regardless of what people say, what his team does, and even if he is disappointed beyond belief he sticks by them.
